The National Forest Fire Information System in Albania
Forest fires are among the most significant natural hazards in Albania, with growing concerns that their frequency and intensity will increase due to rising summer temperatures and prolonged drought linked to climate change. Current capacities for disaster risk management — particularly for early notification and warning — remain limited, making the need for a comprehensive early warning system and stronger institutional capacities increasingly urgent.
The National Forest Fire Information System (NFFIS) is designed to address these challenges as an integrated Web-GIS platform for fire prevention, early warning, and information sharing among relevant agencies. As a real-time monitoring and decision-support system, NFFIS combines geospatial, meteorological, ecological, and institutional data into a single platform, supporting all phases of fire management from prevention and early warning to response and post-fire analysis.
By analyzing weather patterns, vegetation conditions, and historical data, NFFIS enables authorities to identify high-risk areas, anticipate fire outbreaks, and improve preparedness at both national and local levels. The system also provides early warning alerts and real-time monitoring of fire events, supporting faster, more informed decision-making and more effective on-the-ground response.
At the same time, NFFIS strengthens coordination among institutions by serving as a shared platform for data exchange and communication, ensuring a more efficient and unified approach to forest fire management. Supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the system represents a key step toward enhancing resilience, protecting ecosystems, and safeguarding communities from forest fires.
What NFFIS Does
An end-to-end fire management platform covering every phase of the fire cycle.
Prevention & Risk Assessment
Analyzes weather patterns, vegetation conditions, and historical fire data to identify high-risk areas and improve seasonal preparedness at national and local levels.
Early Warning Alerts
Issues automated alerts based on Fire Weather Index calculations, enabling authorities to act before fire conditions escalate into active incidents.
Real-time Monitoring
Tracks active fire events using satellite-derived hotspot data and meteorological feeds, supporting faster and more informed on-the-ground response decisions.
Institutional Coordination
Serves as a shared platform for data exchange and communication among agencies, ensuring a unified and efficient approach to forest fire management.
